Do You DIG It!?
Hey there DIG-gers! It's been awhile since I've shared the dirt with everyone about what we've been up to and also how you can get in on what's coming!
First let us catch up on the happenings at Hawtree Creek Middle School in Queens. We have said it before, but I have to put it out there that we absolutely love working with these kids and the faculty! We are moving quickly into our third year and we couldn't be happier about it. Last month the kids got their hands dirty mixing in organic compost to the raised beds and they planted with lots of heart and soul, seriously what more could you ask for!? Here's what they put in the ground three different types of tomatoes, purple cauliflower, kale, parsley, basil, cilantro, mini pumpkins, radishes, carrots as well as two types of peppers jalapeños and biquitos. They also planted calendula flowers and giant sunflower seeds. Along with planting all these fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers the kids got to dig up their garlic from last year and embark on a new gardening lesson. They carefully separated the cloves and replanted the garlic, learning how to begin another generation of growth is amazing to watch.
We would like to give a special shout out to Ms. Patricia who has been gracious enough to volunteer her time this summer checking in on the garden and helping to care for the freshly planted treasures. Thanks Patricia! We will check in on things of course but also plan on having the kids back out on DIG Farm this September to celebrate yet another school year of learning and growing together.
