Do You DIG It!?

June 11, 2018

Hey there DIG-gers! It's been awhile since I've shared the dirt with everyone about what we've been up to and also how you can get in on what's coming!

First let us catch up on the happenings at Hawtree Creek Middle School in Queens. We have said it before, but I have to put it out there that we absolutely love working with these kids and the faculty! We are moving quickly into our third year and we couldn't be happier about it. Last month the kids got their hands dirty mixing in organic compost to the raised beds and they planted with lots of heart and soul, seriously what more could you ask for!? Here's what they put in the ground three different types of tomatoes, purple cauliflower, kale, parsley, basil, cilantro, mini pumpkins, radishes, carrots as well as two types of peppers jalapeños and biquitos. They also planted calendula flowers and giant sunflower seeds. Along with planting all these fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers the kids got to dig up their garlic from last year and embark on a new gardening lesson. They carefully separated the cloves and replanted the garlic, learning how to begin another generation of growth is amazing to watch.

We would like to give a special shout out to Ms. Patricia who has been gracious enough to volunteer her time this summer checking in on the garden and helping to care for the freshly planted treasures. Thanks Patricia! We will check in on things of course but also plan on having the kids back out on DIG Farm this September to celebrate yet another school year of learning and growing together.

Speaking of out on the farm, there has been so much going on its hard to know where to start. Okay no its not. We think that showing appreciation to all the volunteers that have spent so much of their free time each contributing their own something special to aid in  nurturing the land for this growing season. For the sake of a reasonable read time I couldn't possibly name them all, but you know who you are and we appreciate all that you do!! With that being said we are always welcome new volunteers to help with everything from weeding to private parties.

Yesterday we had an absolutely fantastic time throwing a country themed Bridal Shower on the property. Everyone had a great time and we cant wait for the next one. Reach out to us to have your next event out on the farm, we look forward to making your next occasion special.

We are also so excited to be apart of the new farmers market kicking off tomorrow night in the Bronx. Preston High School will be host to this market every Tuesday night from 4 pm to 7 pm throughout the entire summer. You can come talk and buy from local farmers and purveyor's, giving back to the hardworking people of your community as well as those surrounding it.

One last thing to touch base on is upcoming BBQs and brunches on the farm, the first of which will be Friday June 22nd from 6 pm to 10 pm and then Sunday the 24th of June for brunch. You don't want to miss out on sharing some time on the farm with great people, enjoying farm to table foods and on some occasions live music. Get your tickets now and we look forward to seeing everyone very soon!! Happy Farming :)
